The Yeoman of the Guard

The Yeoman of the Guard

The Yeomen of the Guard has everything you might expect from a Gilbert and Sullivan show: unrequited love, mistaken identity, and a secret marriage. But much like a strolling jester trying to appease an unappreciative audience, under a façade of light-heartedness and whimsy lies something more clever and more tragic.

Colonel Fairfax is under sentence of death for false accusations of sorcery – but he doesn’t seem to mind. His main priority is to marry a maiden – any maiden – so that his estate will not fall into the hands of the cousin who framed him. When entertainers Elsie Maynard and Jack Point arrive in town, Point is happy to consent to Elsie’s marriage to the Colonel in exchange for 100 crowns and the assurance of Fairfax’s imminent execution. But when Sergeant Meryll and his children help Fairfax to escape, Elsie and Point realise they have stumbled onto a path from which there may be no turning back.

Widely considered to be the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the Savoy Operas, Yeomen offers a glimpse into the bloodthirsty world of Tudor London. For once, even in the fantasy world of light operetta, everything might not be alright in the end…

Note: Wednesday night is our Gala performance with optional post-show drinks. Saturday matinee has a children's fancy dress competition - join us in your best jester or clown outfit!

Richard Jones

Richard Jones

Magician Richard Jones set to stun on 2020 nationwide tour following BGT The Champions hit

Richard Jones was the winner of Britain's Got Talent and is a British Army soldier as well as one of the world’s greatest magicians in The Magic Circle.

Having recently had audiences on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions completely captivated, Richard is extending his sell-out tour of the UK earlier this year.

Therefore due to popularity, new dates in 2020 have been announced where the mesmerising Lance Corporal will confirm exactly what made him the stand out act to win Britain’s top talent show in 2016…

And still the only magician to have won the show.

After gasps of emotion shown on the ITV1 programme, much of the audience this month were reduced to tears when Richard paid tribute to his veteran mentor, Fergus Anckorn – a fellow magician who died last year before his 100th birthday.

On his extended tour of Escape, Richard endeavours to break the boundaries of the mind with his ‘magic with meaning’, debuting a further twist on some of his newest, awe-inspiring magic.

In heart-warming memory of Fergus, he will be recreating some of his dear friend’s most incredible tricks too - some of which the legendary soldier only ever taught Richard himself.

And let’s not forget what Simon Cowell said…

"You Sir - are a wizard. That has to be magic."

Tickets are now on sale.

Doug Scott CBE: Kangchenjunga

Doug Scott CBE: Kangchenjunga

Doug Scott is one of Britain’s greatest ever mountaineers. He and Dougal Haston were the first Britons to stand on the summit. They were also the first to climb it by the massive South West Face and survive the world’s highest bivouac just below the summit.

Inspired by his Everest experience, Doug was in the vanguard of the new wave of lightweight alpinism throughout the 1970s and ‘80s. The idea of climbing on Kangchenjunga (8598m) the world’s third highest mountain grew in his imagination and he wanted to try a new route up the North Ridge without bottled oxygen in 1979. Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker, both of whom were already adept at lightweight Alpine climbing, were invited to join him along with Georges Bettembourg, Chamonix guide and scion of the celebrated Charlet family.

Doug illustrates this 40th anniversary lecture tour with stunning photography and in his famously laconic style. The tour coincides with the launch of his new book about Kangchenjunga.

Proceeds from the evening will support the work of Community Action Nepal www.canepal.org.uk and include a sale of Nepalese goods and an auction of signed framed mountaineering prints. Doug will update the audience about the post-earthquake reconstruction of CAN’s projects and plans for the future. He will also be signing copies of his posters and books.
