There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Critically acclaimed Rich Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall’s Countrier Than You and Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall’s (US Election) Breakdown have built him a new legion of followers, as has appearances on Have I Got News For You and QI. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself.

A Foreign Field

A Foreign Field

“If I should die, think only this of me; that there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England..." (Rupert Brook)

A Foreign Field is a true story of three British soldiers caught behind enemy lines in France during World War 1, and their impact on a family who offer to help them survive. The opera paints a picture of the poignant and tragic way in which war takes its toll of people, changing them in their fight for personal survival and altering their way of life. In that way it speaks for all wars, past and present.

‘What cannot be denied is the clarity with which this compelling story is dramatised, nor the craftsmanship that has gone into Wetherell’s score...there is an integrity and nobility about its understated melancholy and bittersweet lyricism.' The Times

Directed by John Telfer (BBC The Archers), with full orchestra conducted by Ben England (Bristol Music Trust)

An Evening with Alan Hinkes

An Evening with Alan Hinkes

Fjӓllrӓven and Ellis Brigham present…

An evening with Alan Hinkes OBE – the first and only Briton to climb all 14 of the world’s highest mountains.

This autumn, Ellis Brigham and Fjӓllrӓven will join forces to host a series of evening lectures from renowned mountaineer and Fjӓllrӓven brand ambassador, Alan Hinkes OBE. With talks set to take place in cities all around the UK including London, Manchester and Glasgow, the lecture series gives outdoor and climbing enthusiasts the opportunity to come along and meet a true climbing legend in person.

An outdoor icon, Alan is the first and only Briton to climb all 14 of the world’s 8000m mountains – a feat achieved by fewer people than have stood on the moon! Boasting an extraordinary

mountaineering track record, Alan’s frank and humorous accounts make any of his talks a must-see for keen outdoor-enthusiasts. The talks in this series will cover many of his best-known expeditions including his numerous trips climbing in the Himalaya (as portrayed in his recent book ‘8000 Metres:

Climbing the World’s Highest Mountains’).

As well as personal accounts about his career climbing in the Himalaya, what drove him to climb all 14 ‘8000ers’ and the challenges he faced, Alan will also touch upon his other passions. These include the UK’s hills and mountains, real ale and photography. As well as being one of the UK’s leading

mountaineers, Alan is a renowned cameraman, photographer, author, Mountain Guide and environmentalist. A fountain of outdoor knowledge, the talks will be a don’t-miss event for any lover of travel, walking and mountaineering.

Closely linked with a number of charitable organisations, Alan is a patron of Water Aid, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Diabetes UK, British Red Cross, YHA and Mountain Rescue.

Simon Yates: My Mountain Life

Simon Yates: My Mountain Life
On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book 'Touching The Void' and the later film, both climbers became household names.

It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering - but not Simon. Over 30 years later, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited.

Come along and witness Simon's tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs.

"Simon is a totally engaging speaker, who both entertains and inspires."

Rob Newman - Total Eclipse Of Descartes

Rob Newman - Total Eclipse Of Descartes
In a world gone crazy, can philosophy help? This sparklingly brilliant new show tries to give you the answer.

"He is the funniest comedian I have ever seen…A passionate, chaotically brilliant comedian." Sunday Times

Rob Newman (stand up legend, best-selling novelist, Radio 4 Sony Award Winner) attempts to piece together a philosophy for our troubled times by sifting through 3000 years of thought: from Pythagoras to Artificial Intelligence by way of Pavlov’s dogs, Jane Goodall’s chimpanzees and Frankie Howerd’s trousers.

"I am completely in awe of Robert Newman. Of his talent, his passion, his intelligence, and the way he turns them to comedy with real firepower. If this world could be saved by a Superhero whose Superpower was Comedy, that hero would be Robert Newman." Kate Copstick, Scotsman

Princess Ida

Princess Ida

Once upon a time there was a princess called Ida, who had been betrothed in infancy to Prince Hilarion of the neighbouring kingdom. But Ida did not want to marry the prince. Instead, she renounced mankind and founded a women’s university, where she wielded axes, ate cold roast lamb, and taught the theory of evolution with dubious accuracy...

Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society proudly presents Princess Ida, a hilarious twist on a traditional medieval fairy tale. Join Hilarion as he attempts to infiltrate Castle Adamant and woo his promised bride, enlisting the help of his friends Cyril and Florian. Inevitably, the three are forced to dress as women and hilarity ensues—but some things are not so certain. Can Ida, with dignity, her post resign? Or will Prince Hilarion’s hopes be sadly blighted? And most importantly: what is the thing that’s known as ‘Man’?
